Atlassian is hiring a Principal Machine Learning Scientist to join its high-impact Central AI team. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on large-scale AI systems, foundational ML infrastructure, and shared AI experiences such as search, knowledge discovery, and conversational AI. The Central AI organization is responsible for creating the foundational layers of Atlassian’s AI ecosystem. This includes building scalable data pipelines, machine learning frameworks, model platforms, and shared services that enable product teams across the company to rapidly develop and deploy AI-powered features.
By providing a unified AI foundation, Central AI ensures consistency, efficiency, and collaboration across teams. The group also develops core AI capabilities that are reused across products, helping Atlassian deliver cohesive and intelligent user experiences at scale.
As a Principal Machine Learning Scientist, you will lead the design, development, and deployment of advanced machine learning systems. You will work closely with product managers, software engineers, and analytics teams to integrate cutting-edge AI capabilities into Atlassian’s products and services.
This role is both highly technical and highly strategic. You will influence architecture decisions, guide experimentation and evaluation, mentor other ML engineers, and ensure that machine learning solutions are scalable, reliable, and aligned with real business needs.
Design and implement advanced machine learning algorithms and model architectures
Build and scale ML systems for production use across large datasets
Develop and maintain AI infrastructure, pipelines, and shared ML frameworks
Lead experimentation, model evaluation, and performance optimization
Collaborate cross-functionally with product, engineering, and analytics teams
Mentor and guide junior and mid-level machine learning engineers
Drive best practices for production-grade machine learning systems
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
5+ years of industry experience in machine learning or data science
Strong expertise in Python or Java for production-quality systems
Proficiency with SQL and big data technologies such as Spark
Experience with cloud platforms and data environments (e.g., AWS, Databricks)
Proven experience building and scaling ML models in real business applications
Strong communication skills to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences
Agile mindset with focus on iterative improvement and business impact
Experience in SaaS, B2B, or B2C product environments
Hands-on experience with deep learning and LLM-based applications
Experience with search, conversational AI, or knowledge discovery systems
Strong problem-solving skills in ambiguous and complex environments
Atlassian offers highly competitive compensation based on geographic pay zones in the United States:
Zone A: USD 232,200 – USD 303,150
Zone B: USD 209,700 – USD 273,775
Zone C: USD 193,500 – USD 252,625
